An officer who allegedly put a $1,500 price tag on the charges of two Clayton County defendants is now on the other side of the law.

Clayton County officer Grant Kidd, Jr., 52, of Hampton, was charged with soliciting a bribe to dismiss pending theft and forgery criminal charges against two defendants, according to a news release.

“A law enforcement officer who is allegedly looking to line his own pockets by obstructing justice undermines the dedication and hard work of his fellow officers as well as the community’s trust and respect for its police officers,” said John Horn, U. S. Attorney of the Northern District of Georgia.

In July 2015, Kidd met the defendants in a shopping center parking lot shortly after they were released from the Clayton County Jail, according to the release. Kidd’s friend, who was not named in the release, arranged for them to meet.

Kidd, a patrol officer at the time, told the defendants their charges would be “administratively dismissed” for $1,500 during a recorded conversation.

Kidd offered to pay the money back if the charges were not dismissed.

The release does not state whether or not Kidd knew the defendants he is charged with bribing. He resigned from the police force when the allegations were made.
