A gun was found Friday morning near the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Building in downtown Atlanta after it was discarded by a suspect in a police chase, a federal official said.

“This morning, as local police chased a suspect in a high-speed pursuit, the suspect drove by the federal center in Atlanta, discarded his weapon, and continued on,” said Susanna Marking, spokeswoman for the Federal Protective Service.

The FPS provides security for the King building and other federal facilities. The building is located at 77 Forsyth Street.

“The Federal Protective Service responded immediately to recover and secure the weapon for processing,” Marking said. “The area is secure and there is no immediate threat to the facility and building occupants. Government operations at the MLK Federal Building are continuing as normal.”

The GBI has the gun, spokeswoman Nelly Miles said.

“We’re going to have an agent go and check the gun to determine its history, trace it, see if it’s registered,” Miles said.

Atlanta police also are involved in the investigation.

It is not known what prompted the police chase.
