A Chattahoochee High School soccer player is facing criminal charges after allegedly punching a referee in the face.
Channel 2 Action News reported that Andrew Gray, an 18-year-old senior, was charged with battery in the incident that followed his school’s April 29 loss to Milton High.
“That student walked over to (the referee) and acted as if he wanted to shake hands but instead that student sucker-punched him on the right side of the face,” a police report said.
Gray reportedly told police that the referee’s penalty call against him “messed up his career” and said he wanted to apologize. The referee declined.
Gray is scheduled to be in court on Thursday, Channel 2 reported.
Fulton County schools athletic director Steven Craft told Channel 2 that he could not comment on disciplinary action taken against Gray, but that the Chattahoochee High School soccer team and its coaches will undergo sportsmanlike conduct treatment.
