The swimming pool season officially splashed off in Atlanta Saturday, as several city pools re-opened for the summer season, including a long-abandoned pool in Oakland City.
A new pool, bathhouse, and splash pad opened Saturday in the Rev. James Orange Park — named after the civil rights legend. The abandoned pool at the park was demolished in 2014 and replaced with a new pavilion, plaza, lighting, and storm water management system.
“Opening the outdoor pools is great way to welcome summer,” said Amy Phuong, commissioner of the department of parks and recreation.
Outdoor pools will be open and free to all visitors on Memorial Day.
This summer the parks and recreation department is implementing a new outdoor pool membership to ensure the safety of all pool attendees.
Membership cards can be obtained on site, but swimmers are encouraged to pre-register on-line for the free membership card.
In addition to the pools reopening, the “Early Bird Adult Lap Swim Program” has also started.
Adults and seniors can access the Grant Park pool at 7 a.m. for an early morning water workout every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Seniors 55 and older are encouraged to participate in “Senior Free Swim” Wednesdays at South Bend and Pittman Park pools and on Thursdays at Candler Park pool.
Senior Free Swim provides a dedicated time for older Atlanta residents to enjoy the outdoor pools for exercise, leisure swimming and to meet their neighbors.
“Whether you want to cool off, get fit or create memories with family and friends, outdoor pools have something for everyone, including designated lap lanes, water features and kid-friendly zones,” said Annika Holder, executive director of the city’s office of recreation.
Holder added that free swim hours will also be offered beginning June 1 at the city’s three natatoriums.
In addition to free community swim during the week, daily rates for outdoor community pools are $4 for adults and $2 for children and senior citizens. Children five and under are free.
