The Gwinnett Police Department, along with many local police departments, are participating in the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Drug Take Back Day 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct 23.

National Drug Take Back Day provides a safe way to drop of potentially dangerous prescription medications at designated collection points. No questions asked.

Unused prescription drugs pose a hazard for accidental poisoning, theft, and abuse. Unused medications flushed down the toilet can contaminate local water supplies and when disposed of in the trash, often end up in landfills posing a contamination risk through soil absorption.

There will be collection points at Gwinnett police headquarters, 770 Hi Hope Rd. in Lawrenceville, and each of the department’s six precincts.

Additional drop off locations include the Suwanee Police Station, 373 Buford Highway, and Duluth Public Safety Center, 3276 Buford Highway. Lawrenceville police are partnering with Across the Bridge to collect at 900 Cripple Creek Rd.

Check with your local police department to see if they are participating. No appointment is necessary at any participating location.

People who drop off unused prescriptions will not be asked questions about their medical history or how they came into possession of the medications.

Tablets, capsules, patches, and other forms of prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, pet medicines, and vaping devices may be dropped off for proper disposal. Liquids, syringes, sharps and other drugs will not be accepted.
