5 things you may not know about Issa

The end of the half-hour comedy, which was created by Issa Rae and Larry Wilmore, was announced by executive vice president of HBO Programming Amy Gravitt in a press release Wednesday.

“Issa has turned insecurity into an iconic form of comedy,” Gravitt said. “The show is as incisive as it is heartfelt, and it has resonated strongly with its audience because of the deeply personal work that Issa, Prentice, Melina, the cast and the writers have put into it. This talented team has conceived a brilliant final season for ‘Insecure’ and we look forward to having many more stories to tell with this singular group of collaborators.”

The program follows the lives of best friends Issa and Molly as they deal with career and relationship conflicts. The most recent season, which concluded in June 2020, saw Issa and Molly coming to grips with their friendship as well as each woman facing a crossroads or end of their romantic relationship.

Aside from Rae, who is the series’ star and executive producer, other members of the ensemble cast include Yvonne Orji, Natasha Rothwell, Amanda Seales, Jay Ellis and Alexander Hodge.

“Very excited to film our fifth and final season!” Rae tweeted Wednesday. “We couldn’t have told a complete story without the tremendous support of our audience and the faith of @HBO. See y’all soon! #InsecureHBO.”

Orji who plays Molly on the series, tweeted “We going out with a bang y’all... thanks for rocking with us!!”

“Insecure” showrunner Prentice Penny also reflected on the end of the show noting he and Rae always planned for the comedy to have a five-season run. He said they “feel incredibly blessed to have done that. Thank you to all of the fans and @HBO for supporting us all of the way. ‘You ain’t gotta go home, but…’”

Production on the fifth and final season is scheduled to begin later this month and it will debut later this year.

Following news of the series’ conclusion, fans swiftly tweeted their feelings of disappointment.
