Georgia has executed Robert Earl Butts — the state's second execution of 2018. The state executed nine inmates in 2016, more than any other year since capital punishment was reinstated nationwide in 1976, but only one inmate -- J.W. Ledford -- in 2017. There are several others on Georgia’s Death Row who might see the last of their appeals rejected soon.
Butts was executed May 4 for murdering Donovan Corey Parks, an off-duty corrections officer, in 1996. Butts, then 18, and Marion “Murdock” Wilson were sentenced to die in Baldwin County for shooting Parks in the back of the head with a sawed-off shotgun and then taking his 1992 Acura with hopes of selling it for parts.
