TV best bets with Shark Week, Denis Leary, 'Zoo,' music nostalgia

It's now the dog days of summer and Discovery carts out a raft of original shark specials on the subject.

Discovery is now focusing more on scientific education than silly scripted nonsense.. (The schedule is here.)

Otherwise, this is a pretty dead week for TV. CBS's "Zoo" returns Tuesday for a second season amid PETA-related controvers over use of live animals. ABC's new Thursday series "Greatest Hits" taps nostalgia mixing current acts with older acts to highlight music from the 1980s through the 2000s. (Yup, you'll get your Rick Springfield, Kim Carnes and Kool and the Gang in the first episode covering 1980 to 1985.)

And Denis Leary's FX show "Sex and Drugs and Rock n Roll" returns for a second season Thursday night on his new Showtime show "Roadies" which debuted on Sunday night.

MONDAY

"The Bachelorette" 8 p.m. ABC — JoJo and the eight remaining bachelors visit Buenos Aires.

"Shark Week: Shallow Water Invasion" 8 p.m. Discovery — Great White sharks swimming in shallow waters near Guadalupe are examined by marine biologists.

"American Dad" 8:30 p.m. TBS (11th season finale) — Stan plans to avoid a suicide mission by learning to become a DJ and taking on Bullock in a DJ Battle.

"Angie Tribeca" 9 p.m. TBS — Tribeca's suspicions rise about a 102-year-old's death, but her concerns are ignored.

"American Ninja Warrior" 9 p.m. NBC (special time) — Philadelphia qualifiers.

"Barbarians Rising" 9 p.m. History (first season finale) — Alaric leads his Goths to sack Rome.

"Devious Maids" 9 p.m. Lifetime — Marisol must deal with a new roommate.

"Rizzoli & Isles" 9 p.m. TNT — Maura decides to undergo surgery, prompting a possible reconnection with Hope (Sharon Lawrence).

"Braindead" 9:59 p.m. CBS — A fatal incident on live television leads Laurel, Gustav and Rochelle to intensify their investigation into the bug mystery.

"Unreal" 10 p.m. Lifetime — Darius reveals his secret to Rachel and decides he must quit the show.

"Major Crimes" 10 p.m. TNT— An ISIS-inspired attack against a member of the U.S. Armed Forces prompts the FBI to enlist Raydor's help.

"Turn" 10 p.m. AMC (third season finale) — There is an inevitable march to the gallows for the captured spies on both sides.

TUESDAY

"Pretty Little Liars" 8 p.m. Freeform — The ladies grow suspicious of Elliott as Ali's condition worsens.

" Animal Kingdom" 9 p.m. TNT —Pope's birthday approaches as Smurf probes whether the boys are playing by her rules.

" The Have and the Have Nots" 9 p.m. OWN — Veronica taunts David with much malice.

" Music Moguls" 9 p.m. BET (new series) — Jermaine Dupri, Birdman, Damon Dash and Snoop Dogg are focused.

" Uncle Buck" 9 p.m. ABC — Miles gets in trouble with Alexis for attempting a risky stunt for his YouTube channel.

" Zoo" 9 p.m. CBS (second season debut) — An attempt is made to rescue Jamie and a leopard with DNA that may hold the key to curing the animal crisis.

" Feed the Beast" 10 p.m. AMC — Tommy lashes out as he struggles through Rie's birthday for the first time since her death.

"S cream" 10 p.m. MTV — A loved one's death reverberates; GW High goes into lockdown; and the Lakewood 5 questions whether history is repeating itself.

WEDNESDAY

"Masterchef" 8 p.m. Fox — The Top 17 cooks compete using guest judge Aarón Sánchez's favorite ingredients in a 60-minute mystery-box challenge.

"Dating Naked " 8 p.m. VH1 (third season debut) Atlanta's David Dees is one of the primary daters.

"Wayward Pines " 9 p.m. Fox — Teresa is put in grave danger and the town's food supply is critically low.

"The Night Shift " 9 p.m. NBC — Jordan bonds with a patient and a coed's fall from a balcony is more than meets the eye.

"American Gothic " 10 p.m. CBS — A new suspect emerges in the "Silver Bells Killer" case.

"Greenleaf " 10 p.m. OWN — The mayor calls in a favor, which leaves the Bishop in a bind that could split the church.

" Roy al Pains " 10 p.m. USA — At Eddie's wedding, Hank helps a theater legend who's experiencing confusion and memory loss.

"Sharks vs. Dolphins: Face Off " 10 p.m. Discovery — How sharks behave around dolphins.

THURSDAY

"Battlebots" 8 p.m. ABC — The qualifying round concludes with 16 teams battling in an arena full of hazards.

"Home Free " 9 p.m. Fox — Tensions rise as the contestants continue on their quest to win a dream home for their heroes.

"Nuclear Sharks " 9 p.m. Discovery — Oceanographer Philippe Cousteau travels to Bikini Atoll with his wife and marine biologist Luke Tipple to examine a marine environment that was affected by nuclear testing during the Cold War.

"Greatest Hits " 9 p.m. ABC (new series) — Hits from 1980 to 1985. Highlights include a duet with REO Speedwagon and Pitbull and a special tribute to Michael Jackson by Jason Derulo.

"Aquarius " 10 p.m. NBC — Internal Affairs has suspicions about Hodiak, but a tragedy slows the investigation

"Sex & Drugs & Rock n Roll " 10 p.m. FX (second season debut) — The band's future is cast into doubt after a close friend dies.

"Marco Polo" 3:01 a.m. Netflix (second season) — This global series returns about the Mongol empire.

"The Great British Baking Show" 9 p.m GPB  Twelve amateur bakers attempt to make Madeira cake; frosted walnut cake; and black forest gateau.

"Killjoys" 9 p.m Syfy (second seasond debut) Dutch and Johnny have failed to rescue D'avin from Arkyn when they travel to Eulogy.

"Passport to Murder" 9 p.m ID (new series) The murder of a Chicago socialite in Bali is investigated.

"Love Thy Neighbor " 9 p.m. OWN (third season debut)  Drew causes an awful misunderstanding.

"Dark Matter " 10 p.m. Syfy (second season debut)  The crew awaken to find themselves being held prisoners on the Hyperion-8 Maximum Security Galactic Detention Facility.
