Republican Donald Trump is clinging to a narrow lead over Democrat Hillary Clinton in Georgia in a poll released Friday by Channel 2 Action News, thanks in part to overwhelming support from male voters.
The WSB-TV poll showed Trump with 46.5 percent of the vote and Clinton with 43 percent, within the 4-point margin of error. Libertarian Gary Johnson had about 6 percent of support and another 5 percent of Georgia voters were undecided.
It's the latest in a series of Georgia polls that pegs Trump to a consistent, if narrow, lead over Clinton in the Peach State. A Quinnipiac University survey released Thursday gave Trump a 7-point lead over Clinton, while a Monmouth University poll released Monday showed Trump leading Clinton by 45-42.
Three national polls out this week show Clinton has a lead of at least 6 percentage points in the runup to the first presidential debate between the two candidates, though her edge has significantly narrowed since polls in August had her with a double-digit advantage.
In the WSB poll, Clinton's 5-point edge with women voters wasn't enough to overcome the New York businessman's support among Georgia men, who backed him 52-38 over Clinton. The poll also had black voters giving Trump double-digit levels of support - 12 percent - a slight increase compared to other recent polls.
Despite ongoing GOP skepticism, the poll showed Trump has consolidated support among most Republicans. Some 82 percent of GOP voters backed Trump and only 4 percent supported Johnson. Clinton locked down about nine in 10 Democratic voters. Voters in Georgia's all-important independent bloc gave Trump the edge over Clinton, backing him by a 39-33 margin.
