CLEVELAND - Less than an hour into the first speech of Wednesday's session of the Republican National Convention, delegates burst into what's become a favorite cheer here in Cleveland: "Lock her up, lock her up."
The anti-Hillary Clinton vitriol is on display everywhere at the Quicken Loans Arena, sometimes inflamed by speakers looking for a sure-fire applause line to rev up the crowd. But no slogan seems to have captured the hearts of the delegates quite like "lock her up."
On Monday, as retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn criticized her use of a private email server when she was a secretary of state, the arena echoed with the booms of “lock her up, lock her up.”
“You’re damn right,” Flynn said. “There’s nothing wrong with that. Lock her up!”
Florida delegate Henry Allen held a white sign declaring exactly that – “LOCK HER UP” – on Wednesday as he roamed the arena.
“Trump is going to bring jobs back to America. He’s going to build a wall,” Allen said about his anti-Clinton sign. “He’s going to make America safe again. We’ve had all these terrorist attacks in America that we never had before. We have police that are getting murdered. Trump is the man who is going to take on the Hillary Clinton political machine, where no one else would have had the chance.”
