Allies of Georgia Republican strategist Nick Ayers are boosting his bid to lead the Republican National Committee as President-elect Donald Trump nears his decision for the top GOP job.
Several media outlets reported that Trump could decide as early as Friday his pick to replace Reince Priebus, who was tapped by the Republican to be his chief of staff. Politico wrote that Trump aides are divided between Ayers, a Mike Pence aide, and Michigan GOP chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel.
If Ayers is picked, it would be another step in the remarkable rise of a 34-year-old Cobb native and campaign wunderkind. Ayers, who married a cousin of Sonny Perdue, managed the Republican’s 2006 reelection campaign in his 20s after his stunning upset victory over Roy Barnes.
He next led the Republican Governors Association, dramatically increasing the GOP grip on statehouses, before heading then-Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s ill-fated 2012 presidential campaign.
He’s since worked as a strategist for Target Enterprises and helped with the campaigns of Sen. David Perdue, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner and Missouri Gov.-elect Eric Geitens before becoming a Pence deputy.
He counts former Gov. Rick Perry and ex-RNC Chair Haley Barbour in his corner. So is Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp, who wrote a letter on his behalf saying Ayers is someone who "understands modern campaigns and what we need to do to win elections."
