Presidential almost-candidate and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker arrives in Atlanta today for some closed-door meetings and zero public events.
According to the Republican's campaign-in-waiting, Walker will "will meet with local elected officials, party leaders and activists," today before heading to Florida for Tuesday's candidate cattle call in Orlando. This likely will include fundraising discussions.
Democrat Hillary Clinton similarly raised money and did not mingle with Atlanta's riffraff last week. Clinton didn't sit for any interviews. Walker won't go that far, but he has handpicked his questioners. One possible reason may be a concern over the Wisconsin governor's comments on abortion. From a weekend report by the Associated Press out of New Hampshire:
Walker reiterated those comments Saturday and charged the media with twisting the facts around Wisconsin's law.
"I think for most people that ultrasound picture that many of us have and many of us have seen of our children and grandchildren now is a wonderful thing and a wonderful opportunity," he said.
This appears to be Walker's second Georgia trip of the election cycle. He also stopped by Sea Island in March for the ultra-private American Enterprise Institute World Forum. Walker will be back in August for the RedState Gathering in Atlanta.
Walker has spent much of his campaign time in Iowa, where he got some good polling news over the weekend. From the Des Moines Register:
Scott Walker's popularity streak in Iowa is real: He's seven percentage points ahead of his nearest competition in the presidential horse race here, chased by a tight pack of four in a clear top tier: Ben Carson, Rand Paul, Jeb Bush and Mike Huckabee.
