The furious Democratic battle between former state House representative Elena Parent and Decatur attorney Kyle Williams, for the state Senate seat of the exiting Jason Carter of Atlanta, continues apace this weekend with this mailer from Parent:
The fight has drawn the attention of the Huffington Post, which makes this acute observation:
The GA Voice put it this way: "it's a slippery slope for Parent, who can't mention who this unnamed Republican group is because it's a gay group, and then she would come off as homophobic."
Cindy Abel, the author of the above paragraphs, is a former executive director of Georgia Equality. Needless to say, the conflict has riven Atlanta's gay community. We have offered it up before, but here's a statement from state Rep. Karla Drenner, via the Parent campaign:
"This is not an LGBT issue," said Karla Drenner, who has endorsed Elena Parent and is the first openly gay state legislator in Georgia. "This is a Democratic Primary and this Republican group spews vitriol at Democrats on a daily basis in its news feed. As recently as Tuesday, they posted an article accusing President Obama of ignoring terrorists. I can assure you Elena would never accept the endorsement of the Georgia Federation of Republican Women or the Concerned Women for America."
