CLEVELAND - The Republican establishment that Donald Trump so loathed during his primary fight came to his aid during this week's Cleveland bash, helping him overcome last-minute challenges and closing ranks around him after Texas Sen. Ted Cruz's striking snub.
And nowhere was that more apparent than the speech Thursday by Republican National Committee chair Reince Priebus. The Wisconsinite was once among the long list of Trump skeptics quickly forced to embrace his campaign.
In his address to cheering delegates, he declared that the New York businessman was nothing short of a savior riding to the nation’s rescue. And Trump, he added, was the alternative to the "same old" candidates that drag down Washington's reputation.
“I have a message to America: Hold on,” he said. “Help is coming.”
Trump, Priebus said, was the tonic to the nation's most pressing challenges: He would bring back jobs from overseas by renegotiating trade deals, stop illegal immigration with the help of a new wall on the U.S. border with Mexico and protect Second Amendment rights.
Said Priebus:
"Donald Trump wants to make sure you can pay the mortgage, put gas in the car, and buy new clothes for the first day of school. Donald Trump is committed to hitting terrorists hard and making the safety of every man, woman, and child in America his number one priority. No more negotiating with terrorists. If they want to take us down, we will take them down."
