Gov. Nathan Deal is confident he'll avoid extra innings against Democrat Jason Carter.
The governor arrived at his "victory" party late Tuesday with a story about the 25 minute wait he faced this morning in the GOP stronghold of Habersham County.
"The turnout has been excellent ... And that kind of turnout is being replicated all around this state," he said. "We feel pretty good about being able to do it without a runoff."
The governor's aides said they sensed the race starting to break their way last week after the final debate against Carter and Libertarian Andrew Hunt.
"There's a sense there's a building momentum over the last couple of weeks, and the weather has been good. Nobody had an excuse not to vote," said Deal. "We had a message that the people of this state accepted and understood. And we think we did a good job bringing this state through very difficult times."
Deal's staff expressed even more confidence. Said Deal spokesman Brian Robinson:
"We're seeing Republican turnout above our modeling in GOP strongholds. We're going to get a couple of points over 50. We're not getting by on the skin of our teeth."
