Former Georgia lawmaker Newt Gingrich will give the keynote speech next month at the annual conference of the Log Cabin Republicans, the conservative LGBT group, but don't expect him to focus his talk on gay rights issues.
Gingrich told The Washington Examiner that his speech will "focus on national security and issues that bring us together" - a suggestion he'll steer clear of divisive debates over same-sex marriage or transgender restrooms.
The ex-U.S. House speaker is one of Donald Trump's leading advocates, and he used a speech at last month's RNC convention as a possible audition for the Trump cabinet. He also made a pitch for gay voters in that address, casting Trump as the only candidate who can guarantee their safety.
“If our enemies had their way, not a single woman in this room could define her future," Gingrich said. "If our enemies had their way, gays, lesbians, and transgender citizens would be put to death, as they are today in the Islamic State and Iran.”
Gregory T. Angelo, the group's president, told the Examiner that Gingrich quickly agreed to headline the Sept. 28 dinner. Gingrich will see some familiar faces: A Georgia contingent that includes Allen Fox, the head of the Competitive Georgia advocacy group, is planning to attend.
