Monmouth University is out with a live-caller poll today that shows Republicans Gov. Nathan Deal and U.S. Senate hopeful David Perdue opening up leads in their respective races and nearing the 50 percent mark to avoid a runoff -- though they aren't there yet.
Here's the full memo. The toplines:
For Senate
David Perdue -- 49 percent
Michelle Nunn -- 41 percent
Amanda Swafford -- 3 percent
For governor:
Nathan Deal -- 48 percent
Jason Carter -- 42 percent
Andrew Hunt -- 5 percent
The sample is 55 percent female. There is no racial breakdown in the polling memo, but the pollster reports on Twitter that the African-American sample is 25 percent. This is likely far too low, as most analysts expect the black vote share to be between 28 percent and 30 percent.
About the poll's methodology:
The Monmouth University Poll was sponsored and conducted by the Monmouth University Polling Institute from October 26 to 28, 2014 with a statewide random sample of 436 likely Georgia voters drawn from a list of registered voters who voted in at least one of the last four general or primary elections and indicate they are likely to vote in the upcoming election. This includes 345 contacted by a live interviewer on a landline telephone and 91 contacted by a live interviewer on a cell phone.
Carter spokesman Bryan Thomas said there were a "bunch of problems" with the poll, including their racial breakdown. He also passed along this note from his campaign pollster:
