Jon Stewart, the longtime host of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," announced last night that he is soon leaving the anchor chair.
As he achieved dizzying heights in the field of political satire, Stewart often trained his sights on our fair state. Here are five of his best Georgia moments:
1. Governor Nathan Deal's "Safe Carry Protection Act" (April 2014)
Last year, Stewart took on the so-called "guns everywhere" law, starting around the four minute mark:
2. Oh the Hermanity! (December 2011)
Morehouse College graduate and candidate for the 2012 U.S. Republican Party presidential nomination, Herman Cain, had a presidential campaign that seemed to be built for late-night laughs. As Stewart said, "We belong together." When Herman Cain suspended his presidential campaign, Stewart lamented the loss of one of his favorite presidential candidates.
3. Indecision 2008 (December 2008)
The Saxby Chambliss-Jim Martin 2008 U.S. Senate runoff got its moment in the sun after Allen Buckley stole enough of the "unbelievably white Georgia vote."
4. Bristling Dixie (January 2003)
More than a decade ago, Stewart took on the state flag debate:
5. South Parked (January 2014)
And, to close, the instant classic Snowjam piece from last year. Segment starts at 1:45.
Update 12:25 p.m. A bonus from our pal, the AJC's Scott Trubey: Stewart brings in John Oliver to discuss then-Rep. Paul Broun's comparison of Obama and Hitler. Hilarity ensues:
