A bipartisan U.S. House panel that aims to improve relations between law enforcement and the black community after the fatal police shootings of unarmed black men will meet in Atlanta on Thursday and Friday to hear from local leaders.
The 12-member Policing Strategies Working Group will meet with community leaders and law enforcement, including Atlanta Police Chief George Turner, U.S. Attorney John Horn and Morehouse University student body president Johnathan Hill. The panel, which includes Georgia Rep. Doug Collins of Gainesville, will also participate in a police simulator and visit a federal prison.
The group is part of a Congressional response to the summer of unrest on the nation's streets following the police shootings of black men in Louisiana and Minnesota and the sniper attack in Dallas that left five officers dead. Rep. John Conyers, a Michigan Democrat on the panel, said the task force illustrates how both political parties can work together after the divisive election.
"Sharing different views is the only way we can strengthen the relationship between law enforcement and the communities they are sworn to protect and serve and is needed now more than ever," said Conyers.
