The voting rights organization launched by Stacey Abrams made a string of $10,000 contributions to abortion rights groups amid a fundraising campaign spurred by the state's new "heartbeat" restrictions.
Fair Fight Action said Monday it's making the contributions to the ACLU, NARAL Pro-Choice Georgia, Planned Parenthood and eight other groups. Abrams had urged supporters to be a "changemaker and invest in our fight" in May.
She and other Georgia Democrats have tried to rally critics of the abortion restrictions to “stay and fight” by donating to candidates who oppose the law and organizations that will challenge it in court.
The new restrictions, which would outlaw most abortions as soon as six weeks, are set to take effect in January but face a certain legal challenge this year that’s expected to tie it up in the courts.
Gov. Brian Kemp and other supporters say it will protect the sanctity of life and uphold promises he made on the campaign trail. Some backers have also vowed to boycott Hollywood studios, such as Netflix, that have criticized the restrictions.
