This ... this is ... this is just ...

"Clinton, who is being pressed by many New York Dems to get back into the game by running for mayor, did not rule out challenging current City Hall occupant Mayor de Blasio in that conversation, the source said.

"Although de Blasio has close ties to the Clintons — having worked at different points in his career for both of them — their relationship frayed during the 2016 White House race, when he initially refused to endorse Hillary's bid.

"So far, no high-profile Democrat has jumped in to challenge de Blasio, whose term ends at the end of this year."

I would like to believe Clinton is merely being polite here and would not subject herself to another high-profile election so soon after her heart-breaking loss to Donald Trump. I would very much like to believe that, if she were to run, it would not be to "get back into the game" -- as in, presumably, preparing to make a third run at the White House.

I mean, no one can be that much of a glutton for punishment, can they? No one can be filled with that much blind ambition, right?

Now, I am no fan of de Blasio, and I don't want to see him on a future Democratic presidential ticket because -- having seen in 2016 that anything can happen -- I know that, well, anything can happen. But surely, surely, no one in the Democratic Party thinks the right way to rebuild their very thin bench at the moment is to have the old guard go back, win lower-tier seats, and work their way back to the top.

What's next, Joe Biden primarying Sen. Tom Carper in 2018? Harry Reid running for mayor of Las Vegas?

Actually, given the growth in holograms and the way they're being used in movies , perhaps Virtual Ted Kennedy could qualify for a challenge to Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker in a couple of years. (Given the questions about her stamina in the presidential race, maybe Clinton would deploy a hologram stand-in for herself in a mayoral election!)

Lord knows the GOP has its problems, but the decimation of Democrats in lower offices during the Obama era presents an exceptional challenge. Going the retread route would be a rather curious way of trying to meet it.
