AUSTIN–A grand jury in Harris County, tasked with investigating Planned Parenthood's Houston affiliate following the August release of an undercover video taken inside the clinic, cleared the organization of misconduct Monday, and instead indicted the group behind the video.
Like every single other investigation launched by outraged state officials around the country, including here in Georgia, the Texas grand jury found no illegal action by Planned Parenthood or its employees. However, two of the leaders of the undercover operation carried out in Houston were charged with a felony for “tampering with a governmental record.” If convicted, they face up to 20 years in prison. (It's still unclear, but the charge may be related to false government IDs created to help carry out the scam).
"We were called upon to investigate allegations of criminal conduct by Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast," said Harris County District Attorney Devon Anderson, a Republican appointed to her post by former Gov. Rick Perry. "As I stated at the outset of this investigation, we must go where the evidence leads us. All the evidence uncovered in the course of this investigation was presented to the grand jury. I respect their decision on this difficult case."
David Daleiden, president of The Center for Medical Progress, which produced the video, was also charged on a misdemeanor count for violating a law "against the purchase and sale of human organs." According to The Houston Chronicle:
"The second indictment for Daleiden suggests that the grand jury found that he went too far in trying to get Planned Parenthood to admit to selling tissue. The crime, a class A misdemeanor, is committed if a person intentionally offers to buy or offers to sell a human organ, including fetal tissue. If convicted, the maximum punishment is a year in jail."
