Asked for his thoughts on Ted Cruz, former House Speaker John Boehner let it rip:
“Lucifer in the flesh,” Boehner told an audience at Stanford University. “I have Democrat friends and Republican friends. I get along with almost everyone, but I have never worked with a more miserable son of a bitch in my life.”
Boehner went on to say that while he could see himself voting for Donald Trump, he could not say the same for his fellow Republican Cruz. And it certainly wasn't a surprise to see Cruz seize upon the Boehner quote as an endorsement of sorts, a validation of the outsider status that he has worked so hard to earn:
As much as Cruz might revel in such "praise," however, it does point to a major problem. Cruz is the Republican establishment's only (and barely) viable hope for stopping Donald Trump, and he is also the man whom the true believers have anointed as the long-awaited "real conservative" ready to lead them into the political Promised Land.
But the man upon whom so much now depends is also someone who is thoroughly reviled by most people to have ever come in close contact with him. Based on repeated first-hand accounts, from childhood through college and into the Senate, Cruz is every bit as graceless and condescending in person as he appears on your television set, which is actually hard to believe.
I mean, when Carly Fiorina is the warm and approachable one on your presidential ticket ....
