Maybe the most powerful and poignant moment of either party's convention came on the final night for Democrats in Philadelphia, as the father of a Muslim U.S. soldier who died in Iraq, lectured Donald Trump over his statements on immigration and about Muslims in general.
"Donald Trump, you are asking Americans to trust you with their future. Let me ask you - have you even read the United States Constitution?" said Khzir Khan, whose son was killed in combat in Iraq.
Khan then pulled his own copy out of his jacket pocket.
"I will gladly lend you my copy," Khan said to deafening cheers from delegates.
With his wife standing at his side, Khan continued.
"Hillary Clinton was right when she called my son 'the best of America,'" Khan said of Humayun, who died in Iraq after graduating from the University of Virginia.
"If it was up to Donald Trump, he never would have been in America," Khan said.
"You have sacrificed nothing," Khan concluded bluntly.
Some Republicans felt like Democrats were doing to Trump what others in the GOP should have done months ago - stand up to him on the issue of banning Muslims from coming into the United States.
"If you are a Republican, you should watch this and be ashamed of what you have done," said conservative radio talk host Erick Erickson.
Others agreed.
