GHSF Daily asked Georgia head coaches to answer these four questions. We'll report from a different head coach each day.
Gerry Romberg, Westminster
1. What is the most memorable game you've been a part of as a player or coach? "It has to be our state championship game against Blessed Trinity in the Dome last season. They had beaten us earlier in the year, and we had to fight to the championship as road warriors, winning games in many parts of the state to reach the championship. We found ourselves down by 14 with four minutes to play, and we score twice in the span of 17 seconds to tie the game and send it to overtime. If you were a fan of high school football in Georgia, it was just a great game to watch." [Westminster won 38-31. It was the school's first state championship since 1978.]
2. Which high school coach would you want your son to play for, and why? "I know many fine coaches in this state that I would love to have coach my sons. In fact, my sons had two of the best coaches in the state at Walton High School in Ed Dudley and Rocky Hidalgo. Two others that I would also like to have coaching my sons would be Mike Muschamp (Lovett) and Paul Standard (St. Pius). Both are not only excellent football coaches, but they coach the entire student and teach players to be upstanding young men while being football players."
3. What is your favorite saying/motto? "'Compete.' It's that simple, compete in everything you do, on and off the field. Competition makes you better."
4. Which GHSA policy or high school football rule would you most like to see changed? "I call it the peel-back block. It's that blindside block that typically happens on a punt or interception return, when a player gets hit from a direction where the contact can't be seen or anticipated. It's incredibly dangerous and can lead to serious head injuries. I know some states are experimenting with blindside block rules, and I don't know if they fully have it right yet, but I know we have to take that peel-back block out of high school football."
