Winston Gordon, Hapeville Charter
1. What is the most memorable game you've been a part of as a player or coach?"My senior year, I played at Clewiston High School in South Florida in 1990. It was the first round of the playoffs, and we faced Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons. We were a perfect 10-0 and they were 9-1. We jumped out to a 21-point lead and turned the ball over three straight times forcing overtime. We lost in overtime. It was the hardest loss in my life to get over with the talent and the way we lost." [Gordon was an outside linebacker/defensive end in high school and college.]
2. Which high school coach would you want your son to play for, and why?"I would have to say Dr. Irvin Clark. He never talked just football. He always talked life lessons. He encouraged all of his players to use football and not to allow football to use you. He also coined the phrase 'un-coachable players are un-hirable employees.' It's a quote I still use to this day! Unfortunately, he has moved on to university administration as a vice president at Radford University in Virginia." [Clark was a football coach for a time at Savannah State.]
3. What is your pet peeve as a coach or favorite saying/motto?"Three rules to coaching: 1) Surround yourself with people that can't live without football. 2) Recognize winners, they come in all forms. 3) Have a plan for everything."
4. Which GHSA policy or high school football rule would you most like to see changed?"The grounding rule if the player clears outside of the tackle. He should be able to throw the ball away! Just my two cents!"
