Eagle's Landing Christian (3-6) has become the first team in 24 years to win a region title (5-A) with a losing overall record. The most recent had been Mount Zion of Carroll County, which won Region 7-A with a 4-5 regular-season record and 2-0 region record in 1990. Here are the 14 teams that have done it, with their region or subregion records and their overall records. West Rome won a state title that way in 1965. Greene County reached the Class AA final in 1989. In 1949, Marist was declared the Region 4-AA champion despite playing only one of its four region rivals, Rossville, which was 0-4 in the region. The GHSA later required that regions and subregions play full round-robin schedules.
