AUGUSTA - Interviewing John Daly ahead of the Masters goes like this:

"Come on, girl, ask me some questions!" the great man booms, a lit cigarette bobbing from his mouth. "Want a beer?"

The pro golfer known for his fancy britches and occasional antics isn't playing the tournament, of course. But he's already winning.

Daly’s annual tradition is moving merchandise from an RV parked outside the Washington Road Hooters, which is one mile yet lightyears away from Augusta National. There, cellphones are strictly forbidden and ribald behavior is unthinkable.

At Camp Daly, this happens:

Daly’s been on the mend lately, recovering from a torn meniscus, but promised his fans he’d be back in the swing of things soon.

It’s hard to say who loves who more, Daly or his fans.

“The greatest thing for me is when someone comes up and says, 'My son started playing golf because of you, or I started playing golf because of you' and all that,” Daly said when we stopped by his mobile headquarters ahead of a prior tournament. As for Hooters, he says: “We’re like family.”
