The Museum of Design Atlanta recently announced its 2015 exhibition schedule. The Midtown Atlanta institution will present four exhibits that focus on the ways that design can change housing, communities, manufacturing and even politics. They include:
“Sustainable Shelter: Dwelling Within the Forces of Nature,” Jan. 18 to April 5, 2015 -- Animals and humans use ingenious strategies to adapt to their environments, sometimes to the detriment of both dweller and environment. The exhibit shows design techniques that can protect the natural world.
“Designing Healthy Communities: Active Design and Its Impact,” April 26 to July 19, 2015 – Design affects our well-being, but too often our design promotes an unhealthy lifestyle. This exhibit shows how architects, interior designers and urban planners can use design strategies that encourage physical activity and healthy living.
“3-D Printing the Future,” August 2 to November 1, 2015 -- From fabricating lighter components for airplanes to designing custom prosthetics, 3-D printing is changing the world by making powerful design tools available to a wide audience. These technological advances offer solutions but give rise to questions. Both questions and answers are explored by this exhibit.
“Make-Believe America,” Nov. 15, 2015 to Feb. 14, 2016 – U.S. cultural exhibitions from 1955 to 1975, such as the World’s Fair of 1964, demonstrate the ways in which design was used as a persuasive force. The MODA exhibit will provide examples of work by Herbert Bayer, Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson and R. Buckminster Fuller which argued in favor of the American lifestyle.
