Byron Cowart is receiving most of the attention among the freshmen at Auburn, but defensive coordinator Will Muschamp has mentioned several other new players who could contribute this season.
They include linebacker Jeffery Holland, running back Kerryon Johnson and cornerbacks Jeremiah Dinson, Carlton Davis and Javaris Davis.
And of course, Lawson, the highly touted defensive end who is “going to be a guy that’s going to contribute,” Muschamp said this week.
"He looked good, real good," defensive lineman DaVonte Lambert told AL.com about Cowart. "A freshman that can come in and play, that's real good. We always talk and work on a few things so having him come in as a freshman and playing that's a big part of this defense."
Even at 277 pounds, Cowart could play more than end.
He’s being considered for the “Buck” position in Muschamp’s defense, which would require Lawson to have linebacking responsibilities.
"He's athletic enough," Muschamp told AL.com. "It's not really the weight — it's what you can carry and what you can do athletically. Certainly right now he can play end or Buck for us. That's kind of where we're training him, more at end right now, but he certainly could be a guy that's athletic enough to do those things."
