Avery Sweeting was called for a fumble on this play against Washington. Obviously, his knee was down and he didn’t fumble.
To mix things up, I thought I’d do a look-ahead to Georgia State’s August camp in a different format, A-to-Z:
I’ll continue to post one letter a day on the blog for the next 26 days:
Today is …
F is for fumbles
The Panthers had a ton of them last year, losing 12 of the 22 in 836 passing or rushing attempts.
By comparison, opponents lost five of 14 in 908 passing or rushing attempts.
It’s hard to win when you can’t hold onto the ball.
Along with the interceptions, the fumbles led to Georgia State having the worst turnover margin in FBS last year.
Georgia State doesn’t track fumbles lost by player, but quarterback Nick Arbuckle and running back Marcus Caffey had to combine for at least half of the turnovers.
Caffey’s errors could be partially excused because he switched positions midway in the season and was being asked to play a position he hadn’t played since high school.
Having running backs who are used to playing the position should help this year.
Arbuckle needs for the line to block better so that he’s not hit on his blindside, which can cause the ball to come loose, and he needs to hold onto the ball better when he’s scrambling.
It’s hard to imagine that the team will have as many turnovers again this season. Fewer turnovers should mean an increased chance at victories.

E is for (mostly) Empty
