Sweltering temperatures and high heat index levels are causing some people to suffer under the sun. According to Chatham Emergency Services, they received four calls on Tybee Island for either “temperature or heat-related complaints” on Sunday.
The National Weather Service announced a hazardous weather outlook for the weekend, and heat index levels reached 110 degrees in Chatham County for that Sunday. In the months of June and July, Chatham EMS reported they received a total of six calls for heat-related complaints.
Chief Chuck Kearns, CEO of Chatham EMS, gave cautionary advice to people out in the sun and told residents, “Stay in the shade. Stay in air conditioning. Drink plenty of fluids — lots and lots of water or things like Gatorade or Powerade. Wear a hat. Wear sunscreen if you're outside.”
If you or someone near you is already experiencing the effects from heat-related illnesses?
“Get into the shade immediately. Cool them off with a wet washcloth on the forehead and/or armpits,” Kearns said.
