The incident happened about 11 p.m. last Friday in the 8900 block of Irvington Boulevard of North Houston, KHOU 11 reported.

The woman noticed a shadowy figure standing outside her window and, fearing for her safety, grabbed a rifle, Houston Police Department officials told the station.

She opened fire several times through the wall of the home, hitting the suspect once, KTRK reported, citing Lt. R. Willkens.

Mortally wounded, the unidentified man fled but collapsed and died in a nearby driveway, according to reports. Police arrived and pronounced him dead on the scene.

He was wounded once in the torso, reports said. Police did not provide a description of the suspect.

The homeowner who shot was not named but was said to be cooperating with authorities.

She did not know the man, KTRK reported.

All indications point to self-defense, but an investigation is continuing.
