Q: At President Donald Trump’s appearance before Congress on Feb. 28, most of the women Democrats wore white apparel. What was the significance of that?

—Fran Jordan, Peachtree Corners

A: The members of the House Democratic Women's Working Group wore what was referred to as "suffragette white" to show their commitment to protecting women's rights, according to statements released by congresswomen who participated.

“Along with Democratic women, I proudly wore suffragette white tonight to send a message that women will not go back from our hard-earned gains,” U.S. Rep. Lois Frankel (D-Fla.), chair of the Democratic Women’s Working Group, said in a statement after the speech.

White was the predominant color of the suffragette movement.

“I’m proud to join my colleagues to honor the contributions of the suffragettes and women over the decades and say in one loud voice, ‘we will not allow the clock to be turned back on the progress that has been made,’” Rep. Annie Kuster (D-N.H.) said in a statement.
