A new analysis of performance with at-risk student groups shows that fewer than half the schools in DeKalb County "beat the odds."
The annual statistical analysis by the Governor's Office of Student Achievement compares schools' ability to teach based on student characteristics that are "outside the school's control." Race, ethnicity, disabilities, English fluency, economic "disadvantage" and transience were considered in Thursday's report for 2017.
Typically, 40 percent of Georgia schools beat the odds. In DeKalb, 47 percent of the district schools did, according to a review by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. All three of three of the measured schools in Decatur beat the odds, too, but the analysis didn’t include the district’s K-3 schools.
