Numerous blog comments were made on Sunday’s Atlanta Forward page devoted to Gov. Nathan Deal’s political appointments.
Future Voter: It is called the "spoils system," and it is where you reward friends and supporters with government jobs.
AJC Lover: Political appointment practices by elected officials in key positions are done by both parties. Both sides often complain what the other side is doing when the other side is in office. Promises are often made to vote these people into office. These appointees are just cashing in! So Democrats, stop complaining, because you would do the exact same thing.
T. Simon: They are all extremely talented and dedicated individuals who are doing a great job in their very challenging rolls. I guarantee you will be eating these words at the end of Governor Deal's first term when things are running like a Swiss clock. The media just can't stand it when a conservative Republican is not only doing a great job, but the public sees it, too, and rewards him or her with big approval ratings!
SAWB: I agree wholeheartedly that the most qualified person should be appointed. Just curious if anyone ever noticed that when the city of Atlanta or DeKalb County conducts an exhaustive comprehensive national search for something like public schools superintendent or MARTA CEO, the person just happens to be an African-American? Now, obviously this would naturally occur some of the time, but not all of the time. At the end of the day, the citizens deserve the best leadership available regardless of cronyism, political party affiliation, gender or race.
Angus: Electorates get the government they deserve.
Big Daddy: What needs to be said here is that cronyism is a Republican trademark. Look at the George Bush appointment to head FEMA, a guy with experience in horses but absolutely no emergency management experience. Also, look at the fact that the solidly Republican states are in the South. All these states rank near the bottom in important areas such as education, infrastructure, technology, transportation, etc. But still, the gullible, hateful racist electorate continues to vote these cronies into office, ignoring the fact that the officials care nothing about them. And for those of you who will respond to people who call out this foolishness by Governor Deal and others like him: Stop attacking the messenger. Until Georgia and other southern states wake up and decide to move forward, they will get what they deserve: last in everything.
