Pitts enamored with President Obama

Leonard Pitts admirably defends our president’s patriotism and love of America going back to Obama’s speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. (“What underlies doubts of Obama’s patriotism,” Opinion, March 1). On March 31, 2008, Barack Obama said: “I taught constitutional law for 10 years. I take the Constitution very seriously. The biggest problems we’re facing right now have to do with George Bush trying to bring more and more power into the executive branch and not go through Congress at all. And that’s what I intend to reverse when I’m President of the United States of America.” I too was enamored with Obama’s words, and in 2008 told a friend I was considering voting for him because I really liked what he said in his speeches and wanted to believe. My friend responded, “Don’t listen to what he says, watch what he does.” My friend was prophetic. It’s easy to mislead and deceive with words, but actions are loud and clear. Pitts has never gotten beyond being enamored with Obama’s rhetoric.

Disturbing threats to homeland security

Threats to partially shut down the nation’s Homeland Security Department should disturb every American. We need to confront such threats whether they come from terrorists or the U.S. Congress. We elect representatives to provide for our security, not to betray that trust in order to extort concessions from political enemies. The U.S. Constitution provides lawful methods to resolve disputes which are inevitable with representative government. Congress should debate, vote and leave hostage-taking to the terrorists. If we really want a safer America, the Homeland Security department should have automatic annual funding like the U.S. Congress arranged for itself. Our nation and homeland security employees deserve better.

What’s the U.S. strategy for ISIS?

Is ISIS hoping to taunt American soldiers to attack them on the ground so they can declare war against the United States and bring in their other nations in support? Will this happen? If so, America must strike them very hard and quickly. If we aren’t alert, ISIS can start bringing their fellow nations into the fray. If so, this could turn into a world war! Do we have a strategy to handle it? Can we depend on help? Our president is commander and chief of our American forces. Does he have a strategy for quick action? I hope so.
