Reforms help Georgia businesses, taxpayers
The Metro Atlanta Chamber applauds the governor and the Georgia General Assembly for a tax-reform package that improves the state’s business climate and lowers the tax burden on Georgia families.
HB 386 includes sales tax exemption on the energy used in manufacturing and a revised online-sales-tax law that will no longer give out-of-state companies an advantage over Georgia-based businesses that sell products over the Internet.
Additional enhancements to the state’s economic development toolbox are also included (such as a discretionary sales-tax exemption on construction materials used in projects that will create new jobs and a reduction in the sales tax on jet fuel for airlines operating in Georgia). Taxpayers filing joint state-income tax returns will enjoy a larger exemption for married couples.
Metro Atlanta’s business community is pleased to see this significant step forward in tax policy that makes our state more competitive and looks forward to benefits to Georgia businesses and families.

Two have rights when woman gets pregnant
Regarding the letter writer who said, “It’s discouraging that local (and national) governments in the U.S. seem to be adopting Taliban-like tendencies as far as women’s rights to their own bodies are concerned” (Readers write, Opinion, March 26): If she is referring to a woman’s right regarding abortion, she needs to remember that in that situation, there are two people who have rights.
Once a woman gets pregnant, her rights will be compromised — because she has brought another human being into the picture who also has rights. Since that person cannot speak for itself, the only hope it has is for the government (represented by the people) to speak for it.

Cheers for adding Luckovich alternative
Of all the many changes made by the AJC (and they are substantial and much-valued improvements), near the top is a counter to Mike Luckovich.
Thank you. These balanced cartoons are brilliant and really add to my enjoyment each day. I also love that I get the AJC on iPad. I still take the print edition as well.

What about all the other slain black men?
While I certainly agree with the protest regarding the inexcusable killing of Trayvon Martin, I have to wonder where all the outrage for other murder victims is.
There’s an epidemic of killing of young African-American men across America. Why diminish the importance of those lives taken almost daily? Where are their rallies? Where are their demonstrations? All life is precious.
