Government has no place in decisions

The recent controversy over President Barack Obama’s comments about favoring gay marriages has caused a lot of people to overlook a major fact. Why should government have a position on marriage? It is a private thing between two partners. I will always be for traditional marriage but if some groups out there want to be different, as long as they don’t bother me, I could care less. I do not try to enforce my beliefs on them and I do not see where a government has any place in these decisions.

We could all ride safely by not texting, calling

The follow-up article on the death of cyclist Paul Taylor was only the second time since the law was passed over a year ago that I recall reading about Georgia’s 3-foot passing law (“Cyclists implore: ‘Share the road,’ ” News, May 14). Nor have I heard a single public service announcement about the law. It’s no wonder so few drivers seem to know the law exists.

It would greatly benefit drivers and cyclists if some public and private money from bicycling advocacy organizations was used for a driver’s education campaign about sharing the road, and about Georgia’s 3-foot passing law. Many of us who ride also drive, pay taxes for the roads we ride on and want to get to our destination safely.

If drivers kept these things in mind and focused on the road (not on cellphone calls or texting), we could all share the road safely.

Consuming alcohol affects males, too

The UGA report showing that freshman females are more likely to be victims of sexual assault after alcohol consumption is reflective of our society’s focus on women as the center of everything wrong about sexuality — thus the current legal wrangling to restrict abortion, to limit birth control, ad infinitum (“UGA study: Alcohol consumption increases sexual assault risk,” ajc.com, May 15).

Where is the study that shows males are more likely to sexually assault said females, while these males are consuming alcohol? Where is the focus on limiting male sexual activity, on their responsibility for birth control and the need to educate males on the dangers of alcohol and the fact that rape is not a sexual function but a crime of violence?

$5 million could have been better spent

Yes, the $5 million art for the new airport terminal is nice but the money could have been better spent. I was hoping for some functional services that the world’s finest airports offer, like Singapore. That airport provides free Wi-Fi, free city tours, a cinema, a spa and countless other distractions to pass the layover time.
