PAKISTAN VIOLENCE
Attack on child heinous,
far from Islamic beliefs
The Taliban— the self-proclaimed protectors of Islamic teachings — have committed yet another heinous and unforgivable crime in the shooting of Malala Yousufzai, who was promoting education for Muslim girls.
As Muslims, we strongly condemn this brutal attack on Malala. This crime is against Islamic teachings, which not only promote peace, but also favor education for every single member of the society.
Prophet Muhammad promoted education. This attack is sheer disobedience of the Islamic teachings.
Islam also defines it as a great virtue to protect women of the society. Prophet Muhammad showed exemplary love for his daughters. The Taliban’s barbaric attack proves that their beliefs and practices are far from Islam.

Real winner of debate
was moderator Raddatz
Kudos to Martha Raddatz for moderating the vice presidential debate. Her questions were timely, well-prepared and succinctly delivered.
She followed up her initial questions when the answers were vague, or non-existent. She kept the candidates from wandering too far afield. As a result, the viewers got a much better understanding of the differences between the candidates.
If anyone was the winner at this debate, it was Martha Raddatz.

TRAVEL
We always have Paris?
Thanks, but just keep it
Regarding “Charles de Gaulle is one sorry airport” (Readers write, Opinion, Oct. 12), “ghastly place” is right.
And, if the rail service into Paris happens to be on strike - like it was the last time we were routed through Paris on our way to Florence, Italy - forget about any chance of sitting in a beautiful city cafe, sipping cognac, and forgetting the whole sorry airport experience. The finale of our Charles de Gaulle debacle was the airport workers going on strike in the airport, marching around, and banging metal garbage can lids together like cymbals.
Mon dieu!

ELECTIONS
This election, reader is
one of the 47 percent
This election cycle is different — for I am one of the 47 percent.
I have worked full-time or part-time since I was a teenager. I’ve followed the rules, regardless of how many times they’ve changed. I’m college educated; served in the United States Marine Corps in combat during the Vietnam War; worked as a firefighter and bomb technician, and retired as a law enforcement executive.
In my life and work, I have seen charlatans and snake oil salesmen who were willing to say or do anything to make a buck or get what they want — whether it was divisive or true. I don’t trust Mitt Romney or Paul Ryan. They are moving targets.
The last time I felt this uncomfortable, I was on the other side of the world at war, and the candidate was Richard Nixon. Need I say any more?
