Give trucks own lanes on I-16
Traffic fatalities and accidents involving trucks and cars are increasing at an alarming rate on I-16 between Savannah and Atlanta. This stretch of highway has proved treacherous with cars and trucks intermixing at an increasing rate. Truck traffic will continue to increase with the deepening of the Port in Savannah. A solution could be building truck-only lanes on I-16. The new lanes could be paid for through an increase in speeding fines and fines on unsafe trucks. Truck-only lanes have reduced traffic on a stretch of highway in New Jersey.

MLK tribute not for Stone Mtn.
The AJC says “A Monument to MLK will crown Stone Mountain,” (News, Oct. 11). Are you kidding? How about “A Monument to MLK will desecrate Stone Mountain.”
We have a monument with Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. Jackson carved on the side. All were Southern Christian gentlemen of the highest order. Davis and his wife had an adopted black boy as part of their family. Gen. Lee freed his slaves before the War Between The States and one, Selina Gray, chose to stay as his housekeeper in Arlington. Gen. Jackson’s black bodyservant, Jim Lewis, was beside himself with grief when Jackson was shot. These men performed honorably in service to the U.S. prior to secession, and served honorably in their service to their state and country after secession.
M. L. King was a serial adulterer, very profane, and plagiarized his doctoral thesis to get a degree at Boston U. The university almost withdrew the degree, but would have been highly criticized for doing so and took the coward’s way out. A little truth in history would help before these decisions are made.
What a sad day!

ATL needs new airport thinking
As I read “What our sole commercial airport needs” (Opinion, Oct. 13), several thoughts stuck in my head:
1. Considering that 70 percent of airport customers live north of I-20, why does a huge metro region such as Atlanta not have a second airport? D.C. has Reagan and Dulles airports; Houston has Hobby and Houston International; Chicago has O’Hare and Midway.
2. MARTA was never mentioned as a very efficient and hassle-free alternative.
3. What are the political monopoly forces that are keeping us tied solely to Hartsfield-Jackson ?
Metro Atlantans, I hope you think about the above issues. When is metro Atlanta ever going to enter the 21st century with respect to transportation and travel issues ?
