COMMON CORE
Just because Obama’s for it, some oppose it
Mr. Belton hit the nail on the head when he pointed out that conservatives liked Common Core — until President Obama endorsed it (“This conservative favors Common Core,” Opinion, Nov. 11). After that, conservatives turned against it.
Belton just described the conservative philosophy perfectly: If Obama is for it, conservatives are against it, and if Obama is against it, conservatives are for it.

DIGITAL LIFE
Social media is often too much information
Many kudos and compliments to Ashley Twist on her recent column regarding our social media addiction (“Vanity rules online culture,” Opinion, Nov. 8).
I cringe at a “friends request” from Facebook. While I enjoy reconnecting with people from my past, I hate the flip side; for example, those who regale me with minutia of their lives — like pictures of their meals, and demands from their children. I may as well watch TV.
Thank you for this perspective.

CHILD ABUSE
DFCS system broken, so who will save kids?
My heart aches for Emani Moss, and for her grandmother. How something like this death could happen in our society today, I cannot fathom.
How scared Emani must have been. Were there other children in the house, and weren’t they able to tell someone of the abuse? It sounds like the grandmother knew of the abuse and could not get anyone to believe her. Our DFCS system is broken.
My daughter went to college for four years and was so excited about becoming a DFCS employee. All she wanted to do was help children and families. It soon became apparent there are goals to meet and unreasonable requests made. Many times, she would call and tell me that she felt like she had really made a difference — but more times than not, she called with tears.
Who is going to save the children?

GOOD SAMARITANS
Thanks to those who stopped and gave aid
My husband and daughter were rear-ended recently on Buford Drive.
To the many good souls who stopped to provide aid and comfort to my little girl, I want to say “thank you” from the bottom of my heart. The trooper who responded to the scene was amazed that they walked away unscathed. As for the person who caused this accident, where were your manners and compassion?
My faith in human kindness comes from selfless folks like this, who helped in a time in need. I am a blessed woman, and am grateful for the safety of my little girl and my husband. God bless these folks.
