New Dems in Congress should tread lightly

The mid-term election is over; the Democrats won control of the House.

Extending an olive branch, President Trump said he will help U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi obtain the position of Speaker of the House, and that her opponents are wasting their time. I hope Pelosi will not break the olive branch into pieces and scatter it throughout the House; I hope the Democrats will not be obstructionist. They should cooperate with President Trump in getting good things done for America and the American people. With the 2020 election in mind, voters will keep an eye on, and an ear open, to the actions of the House Democrats. Those Democrats should bear in mind the thought that what the voters give, the voters can take back.

Ga. must quickly fix voting security risks

While running in the 2016 presidential election, then-candidate Donald Trump said, “We have a rigged system.” Most Americans believe him. We saw foreign adversaries influencing the election in 2016. In 2018, we are seeing chaos in the midterm elections. The gubernatorial races in Georgia and Florida, some say, were rigged. In Georgia, Brian Kemp supervised his own race by not stepping down as secretary of state.

Georgia’s voting system is fraught with vulnerabilities, according to the Department of Homeland Security. There were federal funds available to improve the integrity of our voting infrastructure, but Kemp declined. Kemp decided to use the system that concerned Homeland Security for just one more election. We have just two years to get this right, unless we want history to repeat itself.

Liberals prove truth of MAGA’s meaning

Leonard Pitts Jr. writes admiringly of Michelle Obama and her recently released book, “Becoming” (“Michelle Obama tells her part in America’s imperfect story,” Opinion, Nov. 18). The two writers could be seen as birds of a feather or, more accurately, two chips on the shoulder as they both lament aspects of America and loathe President Trump. Seems the same electorate that brought Michelle her first adult feeling of pride in her country also brought her the dreaded reality of Donald Trump’s replacing her husband as the nation’s president. Meanwhile, Leonard Pitts gets paid to spread his “truth” in a weekly column in various newspapers, and Michelle Obama shares a $65 million advance with Barack to spread her and his “truths” through their joint book deal. Is this a great county (again) or what?

Old pols’ words relevant again today

This is a quote from Wendell Willkie, an American industrialist and politician (1892-1944): “Our way of living together in America is a strong but delicate fabric. It is made up of many threads. It has been woven over many centuries by the patience and sacrifice of countless liberty-loving men and women. It serves as a cloak for the protection of poor and rich, of black and white, of Jew and Gentile, of foreign and native born. Let us not tear it asunder. For no man knows, once it is destroyed, where or when man will find its protective warmth again. The political and racial struggles we are witnessing and the infighting being encountered every day in our government (and in the population as a whole) must cease, or we stand the chance of losing our freedom and way of life.”
