Thanks for TSA help finding my cell phone

During a recent security check at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, I misplaced my cell phone. The loss was not realized until I reached my departure gate.

With limited time, I attempted to retrace my path in search of the phone. Without the concern, assistance and dedication of several TSA employees, I would not have been able to recover my phone. I wish to express my gratitude to this often-maligned group of public servants.

Death on Connector, and nobody stopped

A small article inside the Metro section stated that an unknown person had been killed on the Downtown Connector (“Pedestrian killed on connector,” Metro, June 24).

He had apparently been hit by several vehicles, and nobody stopped. Is this an indication of how far we have sunk in terms of human kindness? It is sad to think that it has become more important to get home or to work than to check on a fellow human being after doing him bodily harm. It would appear that Atlanta’s new motto has become the “city too busy to help”.

MIDEAST UNREST

We’ve had enough of our ‘superpower’ role

Critics far and wide are berating President Obama for his failure to “win” in the ongoing struggle in Syria. Some complain that we should get more involved militarily. Others rant about America’s loss of influence in the region.

None of the pundits who second-guess our efforts — or lack of efforts — to solve every problem in the world understand the current position of most U.S. citizens outside the Beltway. That is, we are tired of the expenditure of blood and money necessary to maintain our position as the “world’s superpower,” and most of us would gladly encourage the U.S. to abdicate that title.

Create entity to stop government bullying

The recent revelation regarding the IRS targeting conservative groups is not something new. It is good that Congress is investigating and may be able to eventually stop this particular incident.

But it is apparent that we need a comprehensive, long-term solution to ensure that those in government do not use the unlimited power of the government to punish, obstruct and intimidate people based on their political activities, viewpoints and donations. Next time, it might be different people — or even a different government agency.

I think we need a separate, independent entity with the authority to investigate complaints and hold people accountable for their actions. Right now, it is obvious that we have no protection against this kind of bullying by the government.
