Writer’s lament offers no plan

It is unfortunate that in a letter-writer’s lament (“France attack is latest in our world war,” Readers Write, July 22) of the Obama administration’s supposed inability to change things regarding the threats posed by Islamic radicals, the writer did not offer any “plans or strategic objectives” of his own. While it is easy to criticize the president, the writer’s commentary would have been far more valuable if he could have proposed ideas that: 1) Are not already very much in place and 2) Have not (by any reasonable measure) shown themselves to be no less capable of changing things for the worse than the plans and objectives he currently finds wanting.

Where is U.S. exceptionalism?

While watching the Republican Convention this week, I’ve been struck by the plethora of signs demanding “Make America Great” and “Make America First.” What happened to American exceptionalism?

Until the rise of Trump, the Republican Party’s mantra has been America is exceptional, and they criticized anybody, especially Obama, they felt did not wholeheartedly accept this belief. Now, the Republicans have bought into Trump’s notion that we are number two at best. I’d like to ask Trump and the Republican Party to name even one country that is stronger, has a better economy and is a better place to live than America.

It would have been unthinkable prior to Trump to suggest to a Republican that America was not the best country on earth.
