SCOUTING
Response to "Remember, it's 'Boy' Scouts" Opinion, Feb. 10
Surprisingly, I agree with Kyle Wingfield stating that it would be simpler if the debate about the Boy Scouts was truly about the boys. Unfortunately, that is where the our agreement begins and ends — as he soon blames those arguing for inclusion for trying to ruin a “national treasure.”
In truth, it is some of the current leaders of, and donors to, the Boy Scouts who refuse to let go of their tired opinions on judgment and exclusion that risk ruining the Boy Scouts. This is just another example of the prejudices of many self-centered people who think they have been given the power to define sin. Are these the type of people we want making an impression on our children?

ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION
Don’t look to Obama
to strengthen border
Regarding “Border patrol postings should go to veterans” (Readers write, Opinion, Feb. 10), I agree 100 percent that we should re-deploy our troops to the border. Our security is at stake, and even with immigration reform on the horizon, we need to take action. The objective of putting troops on the border is noble — but the “how” may be a problem.
Currently, the Obama administration is unlikely to take any action whatsoever. Clearly, their actions vs. the rhetoric indicate how Eric Holder and President Obama stand on this issue. For example, Gov. Jan Brewer and the Arizona legislature passed immigration reform to protect their sovereign interest. What did Washington do? Eric Holder led the charge to sue the state.
Like most Americans, I respect the awesome job our military does and would like nothing better than to strengthen our border security. Just don’t wait on Washington to lead the charge.

NRA’s latest position
shows it’s out of touch
In college, I was a small-bore rifle All-American. I competed a number of years at the national matches at Camp Perry, Ohio, where I won my fair share of NRA sterling. I am a retired Army officer and a former member of the NRA. I own several handguns and rifles and have a carry permit. Even with this background, I find the NRA’s position on gun control to be irresponsible, out of touch with public sentiment, and counter to the public good. Their arguments, none of which are based in reality, demonstrate a level of paranoia that is startling. They are losing their place as an admirable organization that does good things, such as teaching firearms safety and sponsoring shooting competitions. The NRA is doing a disservice to itself, and to this country.

Keep up good work
on stadium, politics
I just wanted to say thanks for all the great stories in the new year.
Mark Bradley and Jeff Schultz wrote great stuff about the Falcons up to, and past, the NFC title game. Schultz’s column “No tradition? Winning can build some” (Sports, Jan. 20) was very entertaining — and true!
Revisiting the Ray Lewis saga was riveting journalism, and much-needed. Thanks to those investigating.
Stay on the new stadium beat! Good or bad, I know the AJC will have the latest developments.
Thank you to Jim Galloway for his political writing. I’ve yet to read his take on Paul Broun’s candidacy, but I plan to, along with Jay Bookman’s take on the same.
Please, maintain the focus on the consumer credit reporting bureaus. The questions for Equifax, TransUnion and Experian are many.
At any rate — keep up the great reporting and opinions.
