Cobb statue disrespect a shame
When C & S Bank donated the Ty Cobb statue to the Braves, it was on the merits of a baseball great known at the time as “The Georgia Peach.” He set 90 records, including most career hits, stolen bases, and the highest career average, which may never be broken. Now, with the Braves moving, the statue will be left behind amid clouds of racism that surround it. What a shame this legend’s statue is being left behind. No one doubts that he was a great baseball player, but it is really sad that current political feelings disrespect a great player.

Obama has duty to make nomination soon
How disappointing it is that Congressional Republicans refuse to acknowledge President Barack Obama’s Constitutional duty to expeditiously fill vacancies on the Supreme Court. In fact, that position is in conflict with Antonin Scalia’s own judicial philosophy. His “originalist” ideas require that the Constitutional be rigidly adhered to. The President’s duty is not in doubt.
Of course, “originalism” carried to extremes is a ridiculous judicial philosophy. The Constitution is extremely limited in scope, is at best a compromise document, and scarcely imagines the modern world. The Constitution can only be a starting point for governing in a world drastically different from 1787. Unfortunately, Judge Scalia’s originalist ideas often were out of step with modern times. Hopefully, his replacement will be far more inclined to accept modern realities.
