CONNECTICUT TRAGEDY
Right to keep arms not
license to mass killings
It doesn’t take a genius or an expert in constitutional law to recognize the difference between “the right to keep and bear arms” and the license for insane people to murder our children. Surely, our founding fathers didn’t envision this.
The difference between the single-shot, defensive weapons of the 18th century and the killing machines marketed today has clearly placed firearms in a category where “regulation” is required. Until we as a people demand this, I fear we will be condemned to continue to endure the horrific scenes we shared recently.
How long, Americans, will we allow this toxin to exist among us? How many more victims? How many more little boys and girls?

Show of grief on TV
was not convincing
The recent murders of the children and teachers are the most tragic waste of life here since Sept. 11.
Such a thing should merit the president being on national TV to comment and express sorrow. At the beginning of Mr. Obama’s comments, I was thinking, “Good for you.” Then, he ruined it with the obviously staged swipe of a tear — not once, but twice.
I had thought Mr. Obama could be successful in Hollywood after his retirement, but he’s bad at acting, too.

POLITICS
Survival odds better
for party in the right
Regarding “The Mayans were right: It’s the end for the GOP” (Opinion, Dec. 9), the Republican Party suffered a defeat, but is far from being extinct.
Marco Rubio and other young conservatives will re-group. They will emerge with workable solutions to deal with immigration issues, and focus on our unsustainable national debt while providing a safety net for those truly in need. Republicans will continue to foster respect for all human beings, and support the freedom of individuals to make choices for themselves. The GOP will survive because they are willing and able to face the reality that nothing is free; capitalism is better than socialism; states have rights; debts must be repaid, and freedom and a job are better than food stamps.
The Democratic Party had a victory, but if they continue adding to our national debt, our economy will collapse. They will be taking a giant step toward extinction.
Maureen Dowd has a lot of faith that Hillary Clinton will march forward and save us all. That can happen only if she and the Democrats face the reality that we, as a country, cannot be free until we live within our means.

HURRICANE SANDY
N.J. sends thanks
to Georgia Power
When Hurricane Sandy hit New Jersey, downed trees caused widespread power outages. It was so encouraging to see Georgia Power trucks driving north and staging in my hometown, Oakland, N.J.
Thank you to the wonderful crews that traveled so far to help. Hope drove into town, and power was restored.
