‘Conservative’ Douthat doesn’t approach right-leaning views
Regarding, “Christian thinkers offered path to a humanist revival” (Opinion, Aug. 14), where do I begin? Russ Douthat violates everything the AJC should stand for. Journalism emphasizes keeping writing relevant to the audience, not trying to come up with words and terms that are meant to impress, and keeping to the subject. Douthat is supposed to be writing under the headline “Balanced Views,” which would be a counter to the column on the left about liberals. He never touches any views on the right, but goes off on a tangent about Christian humanism. Granted, that subject is important, but not in this space. Let him write his own opinion column on whatever his mind conjures up. I hope that you hear how disinterested other readers are in his columns.

Climate change critics need to join search for truth on the issue
A letter to the editor, “Climate scolds keep singing tired tune” (Readers Write, June 19), unfairly criticized the AJC for publishing letters by volunteers of the Citizens Climate Lobby about the challenge of our times – forging consensus about promoting clean energy to stop fossil fuels from blanketing the Earth with greenhouse gases that disrupt ecological balances. My Dad, a minister, taught me to share the search for truth and consider relationships to God, each other and our environment. Effective public policy demands consensus of concern. We need more public awareness and discussion, because the consequence of ignoring the challenge affects all of us. More public and private support for bipartisan approaches is needed. This includes carbon pricing that stimulates the economy and reminds us the fee is being used to help with the transition to clean energy. A carbon fee and dividend does just that.
