We need to support new truck lanes
Gov. Nathan Deal is on the mark in supporting the idea of truck lanes (“State takes $2 billion gamble on truck-only interstate lanes,” News, April 3).
We would estimate there’s not a passenger car driver in America who would not welcome separate right of ways for large cargo carriers. Unfortunately, rail freight service has not alleviated freight movement on highways to the degree it probably should have. While the truck-only project is targeted for a stretch on I-75, there should be great support for these lanes throughout Georgia — and it will hopefully soon be adopted by all other states. Kudos to the GDOT planning Division for moving forward on this plan.

Island developers care nothing for environment
The case of proposed house-building on the Sea Island spit is an interesting one (“Sea Island building plan a step closer,” News, April 7). It demonstrates first that some developers will do anything for profits. When the spit is under water, the developers will be long gone. It demonstrates the developers and potential owners care nothing for the environment. It demonstrates they ignore the advice of renowned Duke University geologist Orrin H. Pilkey, who has repeatedly shown the sea barriers known as groins usually have more negative than positive effects. It demonstrates ignorance of the high rates of sea level rise, hurricane surges and climate change. It demonstrates waste of financial resources and a callous attitude towards the well-being of future generations. Floods on and near Tybee Island have already shown the fragility of Georgia’s coast. Instead of ‘developing’ the spit, let’s put a price on carbon that will benefit millions of other people.
